What About The Tithe?

What About The Tithe?

This is Part 1 of a 3 part series…

The big question so many people want an answer for “Is the Tithe for Today?”

God says, “I am the Lord, I change not”. God does not change the principles He has created.  Tithing was a principle for men and women of faith long before it was incorporated into the Law of Moses. It is still a principle today after Christ fulfilled the “law”. Therefore, as a “principle” it should be followed today. The blessings that were placed upon it as a principle were enumerated in the law and are therefore still in effect.

Three Great Quotes from Tithers:

J.L. Kraft; Head of Kraft Cheese Corp. has given about 25% of his enormous income to Christian causes said: “The only investment I ever made which has paid consistently increasing dividends is the money I have given to the Lord.”

J.D. Rockefeller said: “I never would have been able to tithe the first million dollars I ever made if I had not tithed my first salary, which was $1.50 per week.”

Mark Gorman: “I would rather have 90% that is blessed than 100% of that which is cursed!”

Did you ever notice???

People who don’t believe that the Tithe is for today never say that because they want to give more than 10%… Actually, they want to give as little as they possibly can and still feel justified.

So, with this in mind let’s go The Word of God…

Did You Know That The Patriarchs Tithed

Abraham… the Father of Faith gave his Tithes to Melchizedek

Genesis 14:17-20        And the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley), after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him. 18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all.

Think about this…

Why did Abraham give his Tithes to Melchizedek

the Priest of God?

Who told him to do that?

Abraham lived over 400 years before Moses received the Law from God so we see that

Abraham must have understood by the Patriarchs before him that they were to pay Tithes.

Jacob Promised to Pay his Tithe

Genesis 28:10-22 Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep.

12 Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 And behold, the LORD stood above it and said: “I am the LORD God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. 14 Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”

16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!”

18 Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. 19 And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously.

20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, 21 so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God. 22 And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give the Tithe to You.

So, The Tithe was in force before The Law

The Lord Brought The Tithe into the Law

Numbers 18:21-24     The Israelites gave their tithes to their Priests.

Moses shows us where and why

Deuteronomy 12:5-14 RSV

“But you shall seek the place which the LORD your God will choose out of all your tribes to put his name and make his habitation there; thither you shall go, {6} and thither you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the offering that you present, your votive offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstlings of your herd and of your flock; {7} and there you shall eat before the LORD your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your households, in all that you undertake, in which the LORD your God has blessed you.

{8} You shall not do according to all that we are doing here this day, every man doing whatever is right in his own eyes;

{9} for you have not as yet come to the rest and to the inheritance which the LORD your God gives you.

{10} But when you go over the Jordan, and live in the land which the LORD your God gives you to inherit, and when he gives you rest from all your enemies round about, so that you live in safety, {11} then to the place which the LORD your God will choose, to make his name dwell there, thither you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the offering that you present, and all your votive offerings which you vow to the LORD.

{12} And you shall rejoice before the LORD your God, you and your sons and your daughters, your menservants and your maidservants, and the Levite that is within your towns, since he has no portion or inheritance with you. {13} Take heed that you do not offer your burnt offerings at every place that you see; {14} but at the place which the LORD will choose in one of your tribes, there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do all that I am commanding you.”

They were told that they could not to do whatever they wanted to do with their Tithes…

They were to bring the Tithe to the Place that The Lord chose… The Storehouse of the Priests…

And the Place for us is The House of God…

The Storehouse… The Church!

The Tithe Was the Inheritance of The  Ministers of God

All of the Israelites were going to get an inheritance in The Promised Land EXCEPT the Tribe of Levi… The Tithe and all of the Offerings were incorporated into The Law so they would have a portion of Israel’s Inheritance… Here are some Scriptures to show this…

Deuteronomy 10:8-9 (KJV)
At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister unto him, and to bless in his name, unto this day. 9 Wherefore Levi hath no part nor inheritance with his brethren; the LORD is his inheritance, according as the LORD thy God promised him.

Deuteronomy 14:27-29 (KJV)

And the Levite that is within thy gates; thou shalt not forsake him; for he hath no part nor inheritance with thee. 28 At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates: 29 And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest. (We can actually see here that the Tithes and Offerings were going to be a blessing to many!)

Joshua 18:7-8 (KJV)
But the Levites have no part among you; for the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance…

So if the Levites and Priests had no Inheritance in the land where did they live?

They were given certain cities to dwell in and they were able to cultivate the land there. They had fields around the cities for their flocks and herds and they could work the land growing some crops. They could also make goods from them and sell them. This was what we would call a “Cottage Industry”… This would ensure that they never lacked the basics of life no matter whether Israel obeyed the Law of the Tithe and Offerings or not.

In no way did the Lord ever intend for any of the Priests or Levites to become rich off of the people as some Ministers do today.

Numbers 35:1-3 (KJV)
And the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying, 2 Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them. 3 And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattle, and for their goods, and for all their beasts.

God shows us our tithes should be brought to our Church where our Ministers are supported and encouraged by them.

Malachi 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house…”

Hezekiah Reinstated the Tithe

2 Chronicles 31:4-10 RSV

And he commanded the people who lived in Jerusalem to give the portion due to the priests and the Levites, that they might give themselves to the law of the LORD.

{5} As soon as the command was spread abroad, the people of Israel gave in abundance the first fruits of grain, wine, oil, honey, and of all the produce of the field; and they brought in abundantly the tithe of everything.

{6} And the people of Israel and Judah who lived in the cities of Judah also brought in the tithe of cattle and sheep, and the dedicated things which had been consecrated to the LORD their God, and laid them in heaps.

{7} In the third month they began to pile up the heaps, and finished them in the seventh month. {8} When Hezekiah and the princes came and saw the heaps, they blessed the LORD and his people Israel. {9} And Hezekiah questioned the priests and the Levites about the heaps.

{10} Azariah the chief priest, who was of the house of Zadok, answered him, “Since they began to bring the contributions into the house of the LORD we have eaten and had enough and have plenty left; for the LORD has blessed his people, so that we have this great store left.”

The Tithe was to make sure that there was “meat” in God’s house for His Ministers

Acts 6:1-4 KJV “And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. {2} Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

{3} Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

{4} But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.”

In the Old Testament all of these things were taken care of by The Levites… Those who assisted The Priests… The Deacons took the place of the Levites while The Apostles functioned as The Priests…

Galatians 6:6-7          Those who are taught the word of God should help their teachers by paying them.Don’t be misled. Remember that you can’t ignore God and get away with it. You will always reap what you sow

Just as The Lord promised Blessings on those who Tithed in the OT, He says here that we too shall reap what we sow…

We should sow our Tithes and reap the blessings!

Our Tithes should be brought into the Storehouse…

The Church

And there, the Ministers will be encouraged and receive their Inheritance too.
