The Substance of Faith

The Substance of Faith

Luke 1:37 “For with God, nothing shall be impossible.”

An airplane has brakes but they are of no value once the plane is in the air. When it is in the air it is in a different “realm”. So it is with our natural senses. They are extremely valuable in the “natural realm” but they are of no value in the “spiritual realm”. In the spiritual realm we need faith to use our “spiritual senses”.

Through our natural senses we understand the world around us.

Hebrews 11:3             “Through faith we understand” the spiritual world of God!

Ephesians 1:18          “The eyes of your understanding (spiritual imagination) being enlightened that you may “see” (in the spiritual world)…”

Let’s ask the Lord to “open the eyes of our heart”…

Hebrews 11:27           “By faith Moses saw Him who is invisible”

What do we “see” in the spiritual realm? We “see” the “unseen” things of God. How do we see? We see by faith! How do we get that ability?

Hebrews 11:1             “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for; the evidence of things not seen …”

Faith is a spiritual substance. It is detected with spiritual senses. You can “hear” it. You can “see” it with the eyes of your understanding or spiritual imagination.

You can “feel” it because it is a true “substance”.

Romans 10:8-10; 17  “But what saith it? The word (rhema) is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the (rhema) word of faith, which we preach; that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation; So then faith cometh by hearing the word (rhema) of God.”

The word “Rhema” has a very specific definition: it means: “that which is spoken”…

A Rhema is a specific word to a specific person in a specific situation at a specific time.

When we receive a “rhema” we receive a real substance from the Spiritual World!

The Word or Rhema of Faith is a seed (remember the mustard seed?). When you receive a “rhema” from God you receive a spiritual seed and you conceive in your heart what was spoken to you.

Luke 1:37, 38 “For with God no rhema shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy rhema. And the angel departed from her.”

When Mary received the rhema; the seed of the Word; she conceived what God said; Jesus!

When we receive a rhema from God we conceive that which He has spoken! That rhema can come through many channels; the Written Word, the Spoken Word, a Prophetic Word, etc.

Once we hear it we believe and then we receive it…

When we say: “let it be done unto me according to your rhema”, we have it!

This is how the process of faith works;

You hear the Rhema

You believe it

You receive it in your heart

You see the spiritual seed of what was spoken with the eyes of your understanding (your spiritual imagination)

The next step is to “say” what you now believe to be true.

Mark 11: 23   “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.”

After you say the same thing that God says you have to “hold onto it”…

Hebrews 10:23           “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering”

Satan tried to kill Moses and Jesus and he will try to kill what you have conceived by faith in your heart!

So be like a pregnant woman, rub your tummy!

Then, talk about what you have conceived in your heart just like a woman who is pregnant goes and tells everyone about it!

She may not be able to “feel” it with her hands but she knows it’s there. What you’ve conceived is there too!

So now the process grows:

You hear the Rhema

You believe it

You receive it

You see the spiritual seed of what was spoken with the eyes of your understanding (your spiritual imagination)

You say what you believe is true

You conceive what you believe

Then you begin to feel the substance of your faith and hold onto it!

Soon, like Abraham of old, you “speak about those things that are not (yet in the natural realm) as though they were because you have seen them in the spiritual realm.

Romans 4:17 says that God speaks about the things that do not exist yet in the natural world as if they did because they do exist in the spiritual world!

Let’s place this all in context with a real situation…

John 5:1-4      “After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these5 porches there were a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.”

The five porches represent the 5 natural senses:

Hearing, Seeing, Feeling, Tasting and Smelling.

The Pool represents The Logos or The Bible

The Stirring of the Water represents The Rhema

The Seed of Faith

Today, Christians are waiting for one of the 5 natural senses to tell them that God has done something for them. He has answered their prayers for healing, finances, blessings, etc.

Are you waiting for your senses to tell you that God wants to heal you? Bless you? Bring finances into your life?

1 Corinthians 2:14 says “The natural man does not receive the things of God because they are spiritually discerned”.

In other words, you can’t use your 5 natural senses to understand the things of God… it takes faith to do that!

By Faith we understand!

To the extent that you are trusting in your natural senses you are not trusting God!

Remember, “For with God no rhema shall be impossible”!

So, when you receive a Word or Rhema from God don’t look to your natural senses for confirmation of it! Use your spiritual senses.

Don’t look for the “evidence” in the natural realm…

The “evidence” is in the spiritual realm!
