Lifted Up Out of Depression
Acts 3:1-10 (NKJV) Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. 2 And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple; 3 who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms. 4 And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, “Look at us.” 5 So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. 6 Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” 7 And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. 8 So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them–walking, leaping, and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God. 10 Then they knew that it was he who sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
What Peter and John were doing was the continuation of the Ministry of Jesus…
Isaiah 61:1-3 (NKJV) “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, 3 To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes (that means a headdress of beauty in place of ashes on the forehead), The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.”
I want to call your attention to one part of this verse…
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
Today, we would call that “spirit of heaviness” Depression…
Today, the most prescribed medicines in America are “Anti-Depressants”. Why do you think that is?
When Jesus ministered 2,000 years ago we have no record of mass depression on a scale of what we have today. They may have been oppressed by foreign soldiers and there was a fair share of poor people too but there was no need for anti-depressants.
Today, so many people are ill with many ailments and they come to the Lord for healing but don’t find relief. You see, their physical need is usually not their greatest one. It’s an emotional one and that’s the one that the Lord wants to heal first of all!
Why? Because depression itself makes people sick.
That’s why it’s so important to become depression free. The Lord always looks deeper than what the need on the surface is. That’s why He wants to heal from within first.
There is something that can help us prepare to be healed both emotionally and physically
It is one of the greatest virtues there is in life…
It’s called OBEDIENCE…
If you ask most parents they would say that the most important thing that they want for their children is for them to be “Safe”. They would also say that they wanted their children to feel “Secure”.
When a person feels “Safe” and “Secure” they will usually have a sense of inner fulfillment and self value… things that are “inside”, in the heart.
There is another thing that is a powerful virtue which parents want their children to embrace…
It’s called THANKFULNESS…
When children understand that everything their parents do to is for their benefit they will be “Grateful”. When they doubt their parent’s intentions and question their motives that will not be Grateful which usually leads to Dis-Obedience.
And, without those two prime virtues they will not feel safe and they will develop a sense of insecurity deep within themselves.
The absence of these two Prime Virtues and the lack of a Sense of Safety and Security are the prime cause of depression today.
As children grow up certain things are required of them that will produce maturity and responsibility. So, parents will ask certain questions of their children to find out how they are doing because they know that if their children are OBEDIENT and are THANKFUL they will grow up with deep, inner feelings of Safety and Security.
Our Loving Father asks us similar questions…
When we know that Our Father has our best interests at heart and that He is working all things together for our good we will develop a Strong Sense of Safety and Security.
This is multiplied as we are OBEDIENT and THANKFUL to Him…
When these things are deep inside of us Depression will not be a part of our lives!
So, here are the questions that Parents & Our Loving Father will ask us each day as we are growing up…
PARENT: Did you pay attention in school today?
OUR FATHER: Did you listen for the Holy Spirit’s Guidance today?
PARENT: Did you do your studies?
OUR FATHER: Did you read your Bible?
PARENT: Did you finish your homework?
OUR FATHER: Did you Pray?
PARENT: Did you clean your room?
OUR FATHER: Did you pay your Tithes?
PARENT: Did you help someone today?
OUR FATHER: Have you been generous and given a Love Offering?
Our Father’s questions relate exactly to a parents questions. Just as the parent wants the best for their children Our Loving Father wants the best for us.
If we will make up our minds to be OBEDIENT to Him in all things and have a THANKFUL attitude we will find Safety and Security in His Love and we will be HEALED WITHIN…
Have you ever read this?
Isaiah 1:18-20 (KJV) Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be white as wool. 19 If ye are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land: 20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
Depression is that sword for thousands of people today…
That word “willing” literally means those who are “at rest within” or, we could say, “safe and secure”…
So we could say it this way… “The ones who feel safe and secure and are Obedient will eat the good fruit of the land!
Commit to these two things:
When you do you will find that the “good fruit” is:
And Depression will not be a part of your life!
So come to Jesus and let Him take you by the hand and lift you up…
You can ask whatever you will with that sense of Safety and Security and you will receive it!
